What the HLTAID012 childcare first aid course covers
HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting is a four-unit certificate. It contains everything in the standard workplace first aid course, then adds the part that matters in a childcare room — infants and small children, asthma and anaphylaxis.
- HLTAID009Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including infant and child CPR.
- HLTAID010Basic emergency life support.
- HLTAID011Provide first aid — bleeding, burns, fractures, seizures, allergic reactions.
- HLTAID012First aid in an education and care setting.
- Emergency asthmaRecognising an attack and using a reliever and spacer.
- AnaphylaxisRecognising anaphylaxis and using an adrenaline autoinjector.
Practical work is hands-on. You will do compressions on infant and child manikins, and practise with trainer autoinjectors and spacers.
Why education and care services need it
Under the Education and Care Services National Regulations, centre-based and school-based services must have at least one staff member or nominated supervisor holding first aid, emergency asthma management and anaphylaxis management qualifications, in attendance whenever children are being educated and cared for, and immediately available in an emergency. One person is allowed to hold all three. Family day care is stricter — every educator and educator assistant must hold all three.
HLTAID012 is the course that covers all three areas at once, which is why it is the one most services in Liverpool send their educators to. Check the course name and code on your own certificate against ACECQA’s approved list if you are not sure what you currently hold.
In practice, most centres train more staff than the bare minimum, so a shift is never left short when someone is on leave or off sick.
Who we train in Liverpool
Our Liverpool childcare first aid classes are a mix of long day care and preschool educators, out-of-school-hours care staff, family day care educators, nannies and in-home carers, early learning centre managers and nominated supervisors, and students finishing a CHC30121 Certificate III or CHC50121 Diploma who need the unit for a placement.
Running a centre? We deliver group and workplace training for whole teams, and can look at coming to your service depending on group size and location — useful when you need several educators certified on the same day without closing the room.
HLTAID012 or HLTAID011 — which one do you need?
HLTAID012 — Childcare first aid
Choose this if you work in education and care. It is the one that covers infants and children, asthma and anaphylaxis, and it already includes everything in HLTAID011.
HLTAID011 — Workplace first aid
The general workplace first aid certificate. Right for most other industries, but it does not cover the education and care requirements on its own.
If only your CPR is due this year, you want our CPR course in Liverpool instead. You can see every course we run at this branch on our Liverpool first aid and CPR courses page.
Renewing your childcare first aid certificate
Childcare first aid runs on a three-year cycle, with the CPR component refreshed every 12 months in between. That is the industry standard for first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training, and the regulations require what you hold to be current.
There is no shorter refresher version of HLTAID012 — renewing is the same class as certifying for the first time. The expiry date is printed on your statement of attainment; if you cannot find it, call us on 0475 700 650 and we will check for you.

Childcare first aid Liverpool — common questions
Is HLTAID012 the right course for childcare in NSW?
HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting is the nationally recognised unit written for education and care. It covers first aid, emergency asthma management and anaphylaxis management in one course, which are the three areas the National Regulations ask education and care services to hold. Always check the course name and code on your certificate against ACECQA’s approved list.
How is HLTAID012 different from HLTAID011?
HLTAID012 contains everything in HLTAID011 plus a fourth unit covering first aid for infants and children in an education and care setting, including asthma and anaphylaxis. HLTAID011 is the general workplace first aid certificate; HLTAID012 is the childcare one.
How long does childcare first aid last?
Three years, in line with the industry standard for first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma training. The CPR component inside it should be refreshed every 12 months.
How soon will I get my certificate?
Your statement of attainment is issued the same day or the next business day, on successful completion of the course.
Do I need to do the whole course again to renew?
Yes — renewing is the same HLTAID012 class as certifying for the first time. There is no shorter refresher version of this one.
Does everyone at the centre need it?
It depends on the service type. Centre-based and school-based services need at least one person holding first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma management qualifications in attendance at all times children are being cared for, and one person may hold all three. In family day care, every educator and educator assistant must hold all three. Many services train more staff than the minimum to cover leave and shifts.
