What the HLTAID009 CPR course covers

HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a single nationally recognised unit. It teaches you to recognise an emergency and keep someone alive until an ambulance arrives — and most of the class is spent practising it, not listening to it.

  • DRSABCDThe action plan that tells you what to check and in what order.
  • Chest compressionsCorrect depth, rate and hand position, practised on an adult manikin.
  • Rescue breathsMouth-to-mask technique and when to use it.
  • Defibrillator (AED)How to attach the pads and use an AED safely.
  • Infant and child CPRHow the technique changes for babies and small children.
  • Choking and recoveryClearing an airway and the recovery position.

You will be assessed on two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin on the floor, so wear something you can kneel in comfortably.

CPR refresher in Penrith — your annual renewal

If you are searching for a CPR refresher in Penrith, this is the course you need. There is no separate refresher class. Renewing is the same HLTAID009 session as certifying for the first time, so you simply book the next date that suits you.

The renewal cycle is worth knowing: CPR (HLTAID009) every 12 months, and first aid (HLTAID011) every three years with an annual CPR refresher in between. Childcare first aid (HLTAID012) follows the same three-year cycle. CPR is the one that comes around every year, which is why most of our Penrith CPR classes are people renewing for work.

Not sure when yours expires? The date is on your statement of attainment. If you cannot find it, call us on 0475 700 650 and we will check for you.

Who needs a CPR certificate

Plenty of employers across western Sydney ask for a current HLTAID009 every year. We regularly train people in Penrith from childcare and early learning centres, aged care and disability support, NDIS workers, fitness instructors and personal trainers, pool and swim school staff, security, hospitality, construction and trades, and students who need a current CPR certificate before a placement.

Training a whole team? We run group and workplace CPR training, and can look at delivering at your site depending on group size and location.

CPR only, or first aid including CPR?

This is the question we get asked most, and getting it right saves you money.

Book HLTAID009 — CPR only

Choose this when your full first aid certificate is still current and only the CPR component is due for its annual renewal. It is the shorter and cheaper of the two.

Book HLTAID011 — First aid including CPR

Choose this when your employer asks for a first aid certificate, or when your three-year first aid certificate is also due. HLTAID011 already includes HLTAID009, so you do not need to book both.

First aid dates & booking

Working in childcare or early learning? You will need HLTAID012 childcare first aid in Penrith instead, which also includes CPR. You can see every course we run at our Penrith branch on our Penrith first aid and CPR courses page.

CPR course Penrith — common questions

How often do I need to renew my CPR certificate?

Once every 12 months. HLTAID009 is an annual requirement in most workplaces, and it is the one certificate that expires fastest — a full first aid certificate lasts three years but still needs a CPR refresher each year in between.

Is a CPR refresher the same as the CPR course?

Yes. There is no separate refresher class to book in Penrith. Whether it is your first CPR certificate or your tenth renewal, you attend the same HLTAID009 session.

How long does the CPR course take?

There is a short online pre-learning module to finish before you come in, then a hands-on practical session with a trainer at our Penrith branch. CPR is the shortest of our courses.

How soon will I get my certificate?

Your statement of attainment is issued the same day or the next business day, on successful completion of the course.

Do I need a USI for the CPR course?

Yes. A USI (Unique Student Identifier) is required for any nationally recognised training in Australia. It is free to create and takes a few minutes online.

Should I book CPR only, or first aid including CPR?

If your employer asks for a first aid certificate, book HLTAID011 — it includes CPR, so you do not need both. Book HLTAID009 on its own when you already hold a current first aid certificate and only the CPR part is due for renewal.
